“Chrysalis Gemini” is a future design scenario exploring the potential of self-healing materials. Agustina Andreoletti and I envision the material of a bowl ceramic as sel-fhealing. When you break it or it breaks by accident the crack will “heal” by itself.
With the ongoing technical advancement in self-healing ceramics this scenario is already possible. But little research is conducted into how these materials might change and reconfigure our relation towards thrings through their use.
In our scenario wefocus on the interaction with the material and the quality of the scare of the „healed“ material. We envision the scare carrying the additional ability to absorb flavours and colours. So that the scars are not just scars, but become an additional sensual memory that evolve through use.
The second main point of investigation is the meaning of breaking and the shift this design scenario does therefore propose.
In the published paper „Designing with Matter: From Programmable Materials to Processual Things“ we investigate further into the processual quality and theoretical aspects of these materials.
